Alpha in different contexts

Over 7,000 Alpha courses are running across the UK in every Christian denomination. From the inner city to rural areas, the Alpha course is successfully reaching communities with the Gospel. Read what course leaders say about running Alpha in their different settings.

Using the same content and structure, Alpha courses have been run over morning coffee, in office lunch hours, as well as in the evening, meeting anywhere from homes to church buildings, cafes or pubs. Alpha has also successfully been run in chaplaincies, gyms, prisons, offices, residential homes, universities, parent and toddler groups, youth clubs, armed forces bases and schools, and with the deaf, blind and those who speak English as an overseas language (ESOL). To maximise its effectiveness, the Alpha course has been adapted and developed for each of the following environments:

The Alpha course is registered in 80% of UK prisons.
Nearly 100,000 prisoners have completed the course.

'There is an amazing sense of God using Alpha and moving in these mens lives. There is a real hunger to know more here. '
Bill Birdwood
Chaplain, Dartmoor Prison

Youth Alpha material has been developed specifically for teenagers. Thousands of courses are running across the world in churches , schools and youth clubs.

'I want to show my friends that we do have fun and we have some news for them which is relevant and I'd really like them to come on the course and find it all out for themselves.'

Passionate about seeing God transform the lives of university students in your City?  Student Alpha is being used throughout the UK by churches, student groups and individual students to help students and young adults meet Jesus Christ.

'Student culture sets itself up for the question: What is the meaning of life? This question is posed all around and the Alpha Course with its informal style allows for a forum of dialogue with real answers to real questions.'

John Clarke
Student Worker, Hull

The Alpha Express DVD has enabled the Alpha course to run during a lunch hour. Locations are diverse, including executive boardrooms, city centres, factories, shops and government offices.

'People have come to faith on virtually every course we've run over the last four years. Many people have been envisioned to take the course to their future places of work.'
Oliver Brown
Project Analyst, Basildon

Senior Alpha is a ministry created to reach the older generation with the good news of Jesus Christ. The guest and leaders’ manuals have larger print and key Bible verses written out in full.

‘We have seen many folk come to believe in Jesus at the end of their lives. We have baptised people in their nineties and seen the peace and joy and assurance of everlasting life with Jesus replace their fear of death.’

Carol Gillard
Biggin Hill Christian Fellowship

Over 100 Alpha courses are running in armed forces bases around the world. These are taking place in training and operational environments such as Iraq.

‘I see the Alpha course as having huge potential in this area
and throughout the Forces community.’

Colonel Paul Eaton
Head of Army Information Services

The Alpha course is being used by thousands of Catholic parishes in over 50 countries around the world. Alpha in a Catholic context involves the situating of the standard Alpha course within a Catholic parish or organisation.

‘Alpha is a process of evangelisation that the parish can
adopt and run in successive years.’
