Over 200 delegates from 25 towns in Poland attended the National Alpha Conference in Warsaw, on 26–28 October 2007.
The conference, which was held at the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, was opened by Father Roman Trzcinski, a Catholic priest from Warsaw.
Around 80% of the delegates were under 30 years old. Three people had travelled all the way from their parish in Halifax, England, to receive training to run an Alpha course in Polish in their local Catholic Church.
One week prior to the conference, a celebration was held in Krakow to celebrate five years of student Alpha in the student community of Krakow. 100 local student Alpha leaders attended the event, including Cardinal Dziwisz, Archbishop of Krakow, who had been Pope John Paul’s PA for over 30 years and is a friend of Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. Cardinal Dziwisz said:
‘When I was invited to hear about Alpha, I immediately phoned my friend who runs the Vatican Office for the Laity. I asked if he had heard of Alpha and whether it was all right for me to go to a meeting about it. The answer was that he did know Alpha, that it was good and that it was
absolutely fine for me to come. … We have a real need to find a way to reach young people who find church difficult and we need to share the joy of meeting the Lord. I see how Alpha helps in all this from the testimonies and the fruits that are everywhere....So I urge you all to continue with Alpha.’
After, Cardinal Dziwisz urged the students to persuade every student in Krakow to come to Alpha; there are over 100,000 students in the city.
