Smoke and ceiling-high camouflage nets set the stage for Bear Grylls to speak to an audience of over 500 at the Mill Brook Centre in Winchester on Friday 23rd April.

Bear was speaking about his experiences before the launch of Winchester Family Church's next Alpha Course on Tuesday 4th May.

He told the story of being the youngest person to climb Mount Everest at the age of 23. A dream he thought was dead after breaking his back in three places in a parachuting accident.

Bear also spoke of the two things that made a difference in him not quitting Everest and the quest to reach its peak - friendships and prayer. The audience watched a short film of Bear reaching the summit, and heard of the struggle it took to get there.

He then answered questions from the audience, ranging from who would win in a fight - him or Ray Mears. He humbly conceded Ray would come out top.

Bear was asked about the Alpha course and spoke of how it had deeply impacted his and his wife's life.
