Earlier this spring, I decided to join Second Life, an on-line virtual community. Members interact using "avatars", digital representations of themselves that move through this virtual world, make friends and participate in building communities. It's fun, fascinating... and a perfect way of participating in the Alpha Initiative!
I've met several members who've participated in an Alpha Course in real life, who'd like to continue the conversation in Second Life. I've created a Second Life group, "The Alpha Course 2.0" , that will offer opportunities for community Bible Study, Follow-On Courses, and some chances to party and promote Alpha in Real Life, and even maybe launch a version of the course in SL. To join, please IM Kay Paderborn ( my avatar's nickname) or drop me a notecard in SL.
We've been able to attract enough members to create a permanent group, and SL resident Coy Weatherwax (and real life UK Alpha Course brave testimony giver) has generously offered the use of his home and lovely garden In Fairhaven Christian Community on the Grid for meetings and events.
Basic membership in Second Life is free, and you don't have to pay membership pricing to have a good time. More information about Second Life, system requirements and the opportunity to download the application needed to access the Grid is available by pointing your browser to:
http://www.secondlife.com
If you are registering as a new resident, there is a learning curve in Second Life, so please complete the new user tutorial completely before jumping in. Once you learn the way the application works, it's easy to chat, move around and communicate with other residents. We promise that your Alpha 2.0 experience will be newbie-friendly.
To join The Alpha Course 2.0 and have late night chats long after your favorite Small Group Leader has gone to bed and your pastor has kicked you out of her / his house, please IM Kay Paderborn in-world, or drop me a notecard from your inventory list .
